Athlete of the Month

May 2017 – Daniel Rubin

Finance Bro* (*Not an actual bro. No team spirit)

In general, what is your background?
I was born near Russia’s Pacific coast. My childhood was split between a mid-sized city near the Ukrainian Carpathians and Chicago. Fast forward a two decades, three college degrees and many adventures later, I am getting married at the end of the month to a wonderful woman with two dachshunds. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

How long have you been a member at our gym, how did you learn about CF and why did you start?
Rachel, my fiancée, turned my CrossFit-skepticism into a curiosity early last summer. The coaches and the community at CF312 made me a believer and a vehement defender of the CrossFit gospel.

How has being a member at 312 changed your life/lifestyle/level of fitness?
I am an active person, so I was reasonably fit when I joined. The coaches push me to excel at my strength as well as work on my weaknesses. This approach is making be a better-rounded athlete. I saw the endurance and conditioning portion translate well into backcountry snowboarding last February. I am excited to see the gains on an MTB in a few weeks.

Short term goals (gym and/or personal):
Bar muscle-up/Ring muscle-up.

Long term goals (gym and/or personal):
I have been asking myself this question lately. Not sure what to do next. In the mean time, I enjoy being a bon vivant.

What do you like most about being a member at 312?
In my experience with teams/clubs, etc., people make or break the organization. CF312 community is amazing.

Favorite and least favorite movements:
Favorite: Cleans
Least Favorite: Burpees and Thrusters

Favorite and least favorite WODs:
I am not good with names. I like anything with heavier weights and no burpees.

Favorite post-WOD meal:
Meat! The harder the WOD, the less I care about how many legs it had in life. However, most of the time it is chicken or fish with roasted vegetables; mainly because Rachel loves me and wants me to be healthy.

Favorite movies:
North by Northwest

Favorite book:
I don’t know about favorite, but the most formative was definitely “On Genealogy of Morals” by Friedrich Nietzsche.

Favorite artist:
Marcel Duchamp and Adolf Dassler (Russians LOVE an Adidas track suit)

Favorite quote or words you live by?
Life is short and then you die.

What are a few of your most notable achievements?
I have nothing for the history books at the moment.

I’m passionate about:
I enjoy cooking and feeding people very much.

Fun fact that we don’t know about you:
I sing to our dogs without realizing it. Sometimes in languages I am not fluent in. Rachel tells me that after one of our more social evenings, I attempted Mongolian throat singing. Dogs love it!
