Athlete of the Month

February 2018 – Dave Young

Dave-o, Dave, DY

Systems Engineer

In general, what is your background?
I played more music than sports as a kid / growing up… French Horn, Piano, Bass Guitar, Drums and most recently classical guitar. I am From Toronto Ontario but I’ve lived in Halifax Nova Scotia, London (UK), NYC and now here

How long have you been a member at our gym, how did you learn about CF and why did you
I have been a member only since October 2017, but I did a number of drop-ins at the old spot in 2016 while travelling to Chicago for work. I started Crossfit in April 2016 after my commercial gym i had been using for 3 years closed. I used to do zero cardio and nothing but powerlifting so I mostly started crossfit to lose weight. I stayed with crossfit because all the things other than powerlifting / weightlifting actually became fun.

How has being a member at 312 changed your life/lifestyle/level of fitness?
I used to go to a gym near my home so I would go at 7 AM, but now at 312 we’re near my work so I’m back doing noon gym sessions, which I really dig. The workouts at 312 are way harder than the workouts at my old gym so I’ve had much to adapt to! but its been great, after 4 months I finally feel like i’m progressing in terms of WOD capacity. I also dig the varied strength / skill portions of our classes here. We train some strength movements that i’d never
put any time into before and I also see major benefits there too. Also meeting new people at the gym and making new friends is always great for your overall life!

Short term goals (gym and/or personal):
personal: currently learning javascript, gotta get a car, practise guitar more often gym: 235# C+J, 425# deadlift, 150 unbroken dubs, 335# squat

Long term goals (gym and/or personal):
We have a baby on the way so just mentally preparing myself and physically preparing my house for that is taking up a lot of the horizon…

What do you like most about being a member at 312?
The coaching is great and the workouts are super hard, so that’s awesome. I like the Saturday classes, everyone really turns up for those. People take everything a bit more seriously here which I like, also the place is a lot more mature than my old gym so the average experience level is a lot higher too which I find helps me big time with motivation etc.

Favorite and least favorite movements:
favourites: dubs, cleans, squatting, deadlifting, bar muscle ups
least favourites: burpees, running (remember that thing I said about not doing cardio earlier)

Favorite and least favorite WODs:
my old answer (pre-312): heavy barbell anything with pull-ups and dubs as a favourite, anything where you break up movements with running as a least favourite.
my current answer: any of those ones where you go all-out for 1 min, then rest for 1 min while your partner goes all-out I really enjoy, on the other side though if going all-out includes the assault bike, count me out!

Favorite post-WOD meal:
breakfast things — eggs w/spinach and mushrooms or similar, bacon, toast, avocado. breakfast all day!

Favorite movies:
i’ll just go over recent ones here: three billboards and the shape of water were both great. I’ve loved the two new star wars films as well as rogue one. also I love garbage horror movies like insidious or the conjuring.

Favorite book:
I haven’t read a book since it was required of me in school, and none of them were really outstanding… I’m open to suggestions though!

Favorite artist:
i really like Gray Malin; he does these amazing aerial shots of beaches. We bought a print of ipanema beach in Rio before we moved here. we had spent 10 days there in 2016 and it was a blast. Check him out on insta.

Favorite quote or words you live by?
I always loved ‘do or do not, there is no try” from my main dude Yoda.

I’m passionate about:
Craft beer, Canada, and punk rock.

Fun fact that we don’t know about you:
I’m legally blind. I can’t see well enough to drive. We drove here from NYC so my wife got to do all the driving and I  got to keep the cats occupied in the car.
