November 2018 – Michelle Buckmaster & Jake Cross

“This is our first time having a couple as the athlete of the month, but we couldn’t pick just Jake or Michelle. Both work so hard, have great attitudes, and spend time working on this weaknesses. They motivate each other and other athletes at the gym. This honor is well-earned!” – Coach Steve

In general, what is your background?
We both went to Chesterton High School and then went to Valparaiso University. We were both on the high school swim team.

How long have you been a member at our gym, how did you learn about CF and why did you start?
We’ve been members for one year. We used to do a CF and after we went to the CrossFit Games last year, we were inspired to start up again! So Jake and I were searching for a gym. My co-worker used to go to CF312 so I looked into it. It’s right by my work so Jake and I went to try it out. We loved it and the pricing was affordable so we joined!

How has being a member at 312 changed your life/lifestyle/level of fitness?
Michelle-I have always worked out and led a healthy lifestyle so for me, being a member at CF312 has helped me improve on skills that I’ve always wanted to get better at like handstands!
Jake hasn’t always led a healthy lifestyle so this definitely jump started that for him. He has lost a significant amount of weight since starting and it’s helped him make everyday, functional movements easier.

Short term goals (gym and/or personal):
Michelle-do 50 double unders unbroken.
Jake-ring muscle up.

Long term goals (gym and/or personal):
Michelle-bar muscle up.
Jake-incorporating more leg focused workouts into his lifting routine, outside of CF.

What do you like most about being a member at 312?
We both love the other members and coaches! We love the question of the day and getting to know everyone’s names before class.

Favorite and least favorite movements:
Michelle-favorite: handstand movements, least: snatches
Jake-favorite: double unders, least: squats

Favorite and least favorite WODs:
Michelle-I don’t have a specific WOD but anything with burpees and handstand movements I love; least favorite: anything with snatches or OH squats.
Jake-favorite is Cindy, least favorite is anything that has a lot of squatting in it.

Favorite post-WOD meal:
Michelle- whatever I have planned for dinner that night, lately I’ve been loving this pumpkin chili recipe.
Jake- pizza.

Favorite movies:
Michelle-this is tough for me because I’m a movie and tv fanatic, but I’ll say Remember the Titans.

Favorite book:
Michelle- I don’t really read but right now I’m reading Helter Skelter and it’s really good.
Jake-Rich Dad Poor Dad.

Favorite artist:
Michelle-Rascal Flatts

Favorite quote or words you live by?
Michelle-I’m not too big on quotes.
Jake-Knowledge is Power.

What are a few of your most notable achievements?
Michelle-I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2016 just under 5 hours which was my goal and my first (and last!) marathon.
Jake-graduated from grad school with a master’s in engineering with a 4.0.

I’m passionate about:
Michelle-my two nephews! I don’t have kids of my own yet so I definitely treat them like they’re my own.
Jake-playing piano and guitar.

Fun fact that we don’t know about you:
Michelle-I’m very into movies and the making of them. In another life, I would have loved to work on the set of a movie.
Jake-played guitar on Broadway in Nashville on New Year’s Eve a few years ago.
